SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team struggled early against #13 Dixie State College. Senior guard
Kelsey Janusch led the Lady Penguins with 12 points but it never was enough as Dixie State rolled on to a 76-49 Pacific West Conference victory at the Conlan Center on Thursday evening.
The offensive possessions were a continuous struggle early in each half. As the Red Storm (13-1/3-0) jumped out to a 7-0 lead, it took nearly seven minutes for Dominican (3-12, 1-4) to get on the board. The first points for the Lady Penguins came with 13:20 in the first half on senior forward
Shawna Bryant's
basket. However, the Red Storm continued to increase the early lead with eight more unanswered points halfway into the first half. At halftime, DSC led 40-22.
To open the second half, Dixie State continued to pull away with 13 unanswered points. Dominican quickly showed some life with a brief 5-0 run after Dixie's run, with contributions from senior forward
Shelly Clermenco and senior guard
Tammy Brawner. However, the run didn't provide enough to overcome the challenge presented by the nationally-ranked Red Storm.
Additional highlights for the Lady Penguins included sophomore guard
Kimi Nakamura with a team-high three three-point baskets and senior center
Raquel Gomes with a team-high five rebounds.
The leading scorer for Dixie State was sophomore Johnna Brown with 20 points. Brown also shared the team lead in rebounds with seven, along with senior Erica Carlson.
