ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team tested #25 Sonoma State but fell on the short side of a 3-2 non-conference decision on Tuesday afternoon.
The Penguins (0-2-1) fell behind in the first ten minutes after Sonoma State (2-0-0) converted a penalty kick for the game's first goal. The Seawolves scored again in the 34th minute when a shot was deflected off a free kick.
Pedro Guevara got Dominican on the scoreboard before the end of the half when his shot richocheted off both posts and in.
The Seawolves pushed the lead back to two goals in the 57th minute but Guevara answered again for the Penguins just five minutes later when he sent a shot flying into the right corner of the net.
The Dominican defense did a solid job of preventing the Seawolves from taking quality shots, allowing just seven shots on frame despite 22 SSU shots. The Penguins were more efficient with four shots on goal on just six shots. Sophomore keeper
Matthew Carlson continued to defend the goal well and made four saves in 90 minutes.
"We rebounded well after the penalty kick put us behind," said Dominican Head Coach
Jon Delano. "We worked hard to get a result and it was a good showing against a top 25 team."
The Penguins return to San Rafael for their home opener at Forest Meadows Field on Friday, September 10 when Dominican plays host to St. Martin's University in non-conference play. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. with the women to follow at 4:00 p.m.
