Cal Poly Pomona Hands Dominican Men First Loss

Tim Pinella took a shot on goal in Dominican's loss to Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday.

POMONA, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team fell victim to Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, losing 5-0 in non-conference action.

The Mustangs (2-0-0) scored three goals in the first half and added another pair in the second half to hand Dominican (0-1-1) its first loss of the early season.

Dominican was outshot 27-8 and took five shots on goal. Pedro Guevara put two shots on frame while Todd Mata, Tim Pinella, and Mathew Quitugua all attempted shots on goal in the loss.

Penguin keeper Matthew Carlson kept seven balls out of the net in 79 minutes of play and Casey Gibson made two saves in the game's final 11 minutes.

Luis Gonzalez paced the Mustangs with a goal and an assist.

The Dominican men travel to #22 Sonoma State in search of their first victory on September 7 for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference match. The Penguins then return home on September 10 when to face St. Martin's University in non-conference play. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. at Forest Meadows Field.
