SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The 2010 softball season came to a close for the Dominican University of California women's softball team, with the Lady Penguins enduring a 16-0 loss and a 2-1 loss to Grand Canyon University in Pacific West Conference play on Sunday afternoon at McInnis Park.
Playing as the visiting team in the Sunday's doubleheader, the Lady Penguins (2-32/2-27) mustered just one hit over five innings in game one. The 'Lopes teed off for 16 hits, resulting in 16 runs.
Game two was decidedly different, with
Jessi Saaty in the circle for Dominican. She didn't allow an inning through the first two innings and allowed one run in the third but got a huge strikeout to end the inning with the bases loaded for Grand Canyon. Dominican tied things up in the fourth when
Lesley Fay's single up the middle scored
Robyn Ridpath from second. Saaty pitched two more scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth but Montana crushed a pitch to right center to give the 'Lopes the 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth.
Kellie Hislop avoided an out in the bottom of the sixth when GCU shortstop Kaycee Gamez dropped a ball in foul territory. Hislop then hit into what should have been an easy out but Gamez couldn't come up with the ball, allowing Hislop to reach first base. grounded out to first but Hislop moved up to second.
Jill Rizo doubled to center field and
McKnight was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Saaty hit into a rare 123 double play to end the game. The ball hit back to the circle and Ivy Campas threw home for the forceout and Erika Reay fired to first to turn the double play.
Saaty gave up two hits and two earned runs in the complete game effort but was saddled with the loss. Senior
Analisa Lujan went 1-for-3 in her final game as a Lady Penguin.
