SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team stranded 10 baserunners on Tuesday afternoon in Pacific West Conference play against Dixie State College en route to a pair of 7-0 and 8-0 losses at McInnis Park.
Playing as the visiting team on Monday, the Lady Penguins (2-28/2-24) got off to a good start loading the bases but Dixie State (32-11/21-5) came up with a big strikeout to get out of the jam. The No. 7 regionally ranked Red Storm struck for two runs in the second and four more in the third. The Lady Penguins were able to stop the damage in the third, inducing a ground out and a fly out to leave the bases loaded. Shantae Hunter legged out an inside-the-park home run in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 6-0. Dominican recorded four hits over the next three innings but were unable to plate a run.
In game two, Dixie State struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning and two singles and a stolen base set up an RBI single in the second.
Robyn Ridpath crushed a single to left field in the top half of the fourth for the lone Lady Penguins hit. Cassi Merrill's triple to center field drove home two and gave Dixie State an 8-0 lead in the sixth inning, invoking the mercy rule.
Merrill and Anna Cue led the Red Storm with three RBI apiece.
Molly Howard continued to swing the bat well and had two of Dominican's eight hits.
Cortnie Chenoweth also had two hits. Catcher
Jill Rizo threw out a runner in each game.
The Dominican women play their last four games at home at McInnis Park on Saturday, April 24, and Sunday, April 25 when Grand Canyon University visits for a pair of PacWest doubleheaders. First pitch for both days is set for 12:00 p.m. Senior
Analisa Lujan will be honored in a pregame ceremony before Sunday's games.
