HILO, HI — For the second straight day the Dominican University of California women's softball team suffered through rain delays, only to be shutout 8-0 twice by the University of Hawai'i at Hilo in a pair of Pacific West Conference games.
Things looked promising in the first inning for the Lady Penguins (1-7/1-5) when
Molly Howard singled. However she was caught in a double play two batters later and Dominican would not have another baserunner in the first game. The Vulcans (12-5/8-4) opened the game up in the third inning, plating six runs, three unearned, on five hits. UH-Hilo scored twice in the sixth inning to cut the game short at six innings.
The Vulcans jumped out to a 4-0 lead before
Robyn Ridpath singled up the middle to get the Lady Penguins on the basepaths. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Alisha McKnight but was stranded. UH-Hilo scored once in the third and twice in the fourth to wrap things up in five innings.
Dominican now travels to the island of Oahu to face Chaminade University for a pair of doubleheaders. The first doubleheader is scheduled for Thursday, March 11 with the second doubleheader to be played on Friday, March 12.
