SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team went wire-to-wire on Saturday night, defeating Chaminade University 90-60 in Pacific West Conference play.
Melissa Wise scored the game's first basket and the Lady Penguins never relinquished the lead in Dominican's final contest of the 2009-10 season, its first in the NCAA Division II PacWest. Dominican's all-time leading scorer
Alisha Flaaten pushed the lead to 10 just five minutes into play and a
Tammy Brawner three-pointer pushed Dominican's first-half lead to 28.
After taking a 48-24 lead into halftime, Dominican bested the Silver Swords by four points in the second half to extend the final differential to 30 points.
The Lady Penguins made half of their 68 field goal attempts and limited the Silver Swords to 23-of-59 (.390) shooting. Dominican also outrebounded Chaminade 43-34. The Lady Penguins also distributed the ball well, dishing out 22 assists while making just 11 turnovers.
Flaaten led all players with 24 points in her final game in the black and gold. Fellow senior
Michaelia Baskerville notched a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds in her final game.
Raquel Gomes chipped in 10 points in the victory.
Kimi Nakamura drained three three-pointers to finish the night with nine points and
Kiley Berlinksi also added nine points.
Samantha Saito led Chaminade with 14 points. Brittany Bridges posted 13 points in the loss. With the loss, the Silver Swords fall to 0-15.
With the win, the Dominican women finish their first year of Division II play with a 7-20 overall mark and a 4-12 PacWest conference record.
