SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team split its doubleheader against BYU-Hawaii on Monday afternoon at McInnis Park. The Lady Penguins rebounded from a 16-5 six-inning loss in the first game by shutting out the Seasiders 3-0 in game two of the Pacific West Conference doubleheader.
Game one started earlier than the scheduled 12:00 p.m. first pitch to avoid a possible rainout and BYU-Hawaii was ready from the get-go. The Seasiders (3-27/3-18) plated three runs in the first inning despite recording just one hit but
Alisha McKnight limited the damage by getting Kadi Findling striking out looking to leave the bases loaded. The Seasiders took advantage of three Dominican errors in the second inning and tacked on four more runs.
Kellie Hislop walked and
Alisha McKnight doubled to start the bottom of the second.
Jessi Saaty drove Hislop in on a fielder's choice and McKnight came in on an error to cut the lead to 7-2. McKnight tripled in the third inning and
Cortnie Chenoweth drove her in with a single through the left side. The Lady Penguins let the game get away in the sixth inning when BYU-Hawaii exploded for nine runs, only eight of which were earned. Dominican plated two runs in the the bottom half of the inning but stranded two to end the game.
Dominican (2-20/2-16) struck first in game two, pushing a pair of runs across in the first inning.

Molly Howard and McKnight walked with the bases loaded to score
Robyn Ridpath. The Lady Penguins scored another run in the second inning when Saaty helped her effort with a single to left field. She scored when Ridpath drove a ball up the middle for the RBI.
After committing seven errors in game one, Dominican was much sharper defensively despite making three more errors. Saaty pitched seven innings of one-hit ball and issued just one walk, facing three batters over the minimum, to record the win. She was backed by solid defense, including a 4-3 double play in the third inning and a 4-6-3 double play in the fourth.
The Lady Penguins and Seasiders are back at it on Tuesday with another PacWest doubleheader at McInnis Park. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and the Seasiders will bat as the home team.
