BELMONT, Calif. —
Robyn Ridpath powered the Dominican University of California women's softball team to a 4-3 win over Notre Dame de Namur University in its first Pacific West Conference game. The Lady Penguins dropped the second game of the doubleheader, 5-4.
NDNU scored in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead but Dominican opened the game up in the second.
Lesley Fay singled, and
Shawna Robb reached base on an error. With two on, Ridpath crushed a three-run homer to put Dominican up 3-0.
Ridpath doubled in the fifth inning, setting up an RBI single by
Molly Howard two batters later that would add an insurance run. Nicole Burr hit a two-run homer but the Lady Penguins shut the the Argonauts out the rest of the way.
Fay pitched a full seven innings to earn her first win of the season for Dominican. NDNU's Sammy McConvey pitched five innings and was charged with the loss.
In game two, it was NDNU striking first, scoring in the second inning off a Jessica Long RBI Single.
The Lady Penguins answered with a run in the top of the fourth when Ridpath doubled and Howard pushed her across with an RBI double. Another Long RBI in the bottom half of the inning put the Argonauts back in front.
A three-run NDNU fifth would be enough to take the second game, despite a run in the sixth and two in the seventh by Dominican.
Alisha McKnight took the loss with four innings of five hit ball. Mary Ortega earned the win for the Argonauts.
Ridpath finished her day 4-for-7 at the plate with three runs and three RBI. Robb finished her day 3-for-7 at the plate.
Dominican returns to Belmont tomorrow for two more PacWest games against NDNU with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m. The Lady Penguins then travel to Sonoma State University on Sunday, Feb. 28 for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch against the Seawolves is set for 12:00 p.m.
