Penguins Complete Season Sweep of AAU

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team got a full team effort as the Penguins topped Academy of Art University 81-58 on Thursday night at the Conlan Center and completed a season sweep of the Urban Knights.

Dominican jumped out to a 4-0 lead and an Alex Ward bucket stretched the lead to double digits at the 9-minute mark. Alastair Flack found Mike Wells spotted up for the three-pointer and Wells drew the foul for the four-point play to extend the lead to 14. Wells' four-point play sparked an 11-0 run that found the Penguins leading 38-17 with four minutes left in the first half. From there, Dominican extended the lead to 28 before a pair of Samuel Phillip free throws trimmed the lead to 50-24 going into halftime.

An Austin Bryan fast break layup pushed Dominican's lead to 30 points but the Urban Knights responded with a 12-4 run to cut the lead to 22. Dominican kept AAU at bay the rest of the way, extending the lead back to 26 before the Urban Knights trimmed the final decision to 81-56.

The Penguins forced 21 turnovers and limited AAU to .415 shooting from the field. The Penguins shot .475 (29-of-61) from the field, including a .500 clip (9-of-18) from behind the three point line.

Bryan made four three pointers and led all players with 22 points, a point shy of his conference leading average. Xander McNally added 15 points and a team-leading eight rebounds. Bryan and McNally each collected four steals. Flack and Xavier Muldrow added eight points apiece and Flack dished out eight assists in the victory.

Jonathan Burnett led the Urban Knights with 14 points. Weleh Dennis added 10 points in the loss.

The Penguins host Notre Dame de Namur University on Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Conlan Center and will look for a season sweep of the Argonauts. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., as the second game of a PacWest doubleheader with the women's teams.
