AAU brushes past Lady Penguins

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team turned in another close match but it wasn't enough, this time falling to Pacific West Conference opponent Academy of Art University, 23-25, 25-22, 22-25, 13-25.

The Urban Knights (11-2) downed the Lady Penguins (3-9) in game one but the Lady Penguins bounced back in game two, thanks to the strong play of Cayla Morphew, who placed six kills in the frame.

A 7-0 run in game three put the Lady Penguins ahead 16-13 but the Urban Knights roared back with five straight points of their own to take back the lead 18-16. Dominican ran out of steam in game four, as the Urban Knights used two separate five-point runs to take the match.

Morphew finished with 11 kills to lead the Lady Penguins. Setter Brooke Swingle dished out 27 assists. Libero LaShelle Rullan dug 11 balls.

Dan Yang accounted for 18 of the Urban Knight's 53 kills, placed three service aces, and added 10 digs.

The Lady Penguins have a short break before they take the court again on Sept. 26, Dominican Spirit Day. The 7:00 p.m. match tops off a full day of festivities at Dominican, including a bbq lunch on the Meadowlands lawn that will feature Director of Athletics Terry Tumey in a dunk tank.
