ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team were welcome to NCAA Divsion II-level play with a 3-1 loss to Chico State in game one of the Seawolf Spike Tournament hosted by Sonoma State University on Friday. The Lady Penguins came from behind in their second match of the day to defeat Humboldt State University 3-2 for the program's first win as a PacWest school.
The Lady Penguins struck first on senior
Gabby Pecora's kill and jumped out to a 4-2 lead before giving up seven unanswered points to fall behind 4-9. Dominican closed out the period with five unanswered points to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
Chico State roared back in games two and three, winning convincingly 25-16 and 25-18.
Dominican would put down a game-high 14 kills in game the fourth frame but it wasn't enough as Chico State outlasted the Lady Penguins 27-25 for the victory.
Pecora led the Penguins with twelve kills in the loss.
In the second match of the day, Dominican picked up the University's first-ever victory in any sport as a PacWest program.
Dominican took an early lead again 3-0 but fell behind soon after, giving up seven unanswered points to fall behind, eventually falling 25-20 in game one.
HSU took a convincing 25-18 decision in game three but Dominican answered the calls in games four and give, blowing out the Jacks 25-14 and 15-9. With the match, each team becomes 1-1.
Gabby Pecora came out firing to finish the match with 22 kills. Newcomer
Tianna Tuatagaloa finished the night with 14 kills and
Cayla Morphew added 10 kills in the victory.
Brooke Swingle posted 44 of the team's 49 assists and Pecora and Tuatagaloa each added two services aces in the victory.
The Lady Penguins continue action on Saturday when they take on host Sonoma State University and CSU Stanislaus in day two of the Seawolf Spike Tournament.
