Two-out hitting lifts Lady Penguins over visiting CSU East Bay

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — A day after splitting two games with Bethany University, the Dominican University of California women's softball team put together a solid day of play to sweep CSU East Bay 4-2 and 4-3.

Dominican (8-26/6-12 Cal Pac) got solid pitching from freshman starters Brooke Rhoades and Jessi Saaty. The offense came alive at the right time, knocking home runs twice with two outs.

CSU East Bay (14-23/11-8 Cal Pac) struck first, plating two runs in the top of the second inning of game one.  A two-out single to left by Saaty allowed designated player Kristin Kennedy to score. Dominican came alive in the fifth inning, all with two outs. Freshman catcher Jill Rizo single scored center fielder Ashley Mills to tie the game.  Freshman first baseman Kellie Hislop singled to score Rizo and freshman left fielder Shawna Robb. to put the Lady Penguins up for good. Rhoades shut the Pioneers down the rest of the way, allowing just seven his and giving up four walks. She finished the day with nine strike outs over seven innings.

Freshman third baseman Robyn Ridpath was at the center of the offense in game two. Ridpath went 2-for-3 while driving in two RBIs and scoring two runs.  Her two-out triple in the second inning scored Robb. The Pioneers evened the score 2-2 in the top of the third but Saaty induced a pop up to escape further trouble. A Ridpath single in the bottom of the fourth inning plated Kennedy. Ridpath reached home on a two-out throwing error by CSUEB.  The Pioneers threatened in the top of the seventh inning when three straight singles plated a run but Saaty got CSUEB's final two batters to fly out and pop out.
Saaty threw 101 pitches to earn the complete game victory. She limited the Pioneers to just five hits and walked two batters.  She struck out eight while allowing three earned runs.

The Lady Penguins will finish Cal Pac Conference play on Saturday, April 25 with two home games against first place Holy Names University. First pitch of the double header is set for 12:00 p.m. with game two to follow at 2:00 p.m.

Dominican will finish out the season on Sunday, April 26 with a non-conference doubleheader against Patten University. Sunday will also be the team's senior day, honoring the team's seniors. First pitch at McInnis Park is slated for 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.
