Coach Tovani has over 35 years of basketball experience and wisdom. From 1973 to 2001, Tovani was varsity boys basketball coach at San Rafael High School, where he led the Bulldogs to six Marin County Athletic Championships and five North Coast Section championships. Tovani assisted the Dominican men’s basketball team in 2002-2003, in which the Penguins earned their first California Pacific Conference Championship title and berth to the NAIA Division II National Tournament. Tovani took a two year hiatus from coaching to write Defending the Middle Half: An Approach to Defensive Basketball, published in 2004. In his first season as head coach at Dominican, Tovani led the Penguins to their fourth Cal Pac Championship, earning him the 2005-2006 Cal Pac Coach of the Year honor. In 2007-2008, Tovani again led the Penguins to an 18-12 mark to capture the program’s fifth Cal Pac Championship and was named Coach of the Year for a second time. Tovani earned his BA in geography with a minor in physical education from San Francisco State University.
