David Frank was named Dominican’s head men’s soccer coach on March 21, 2018, and also serves as the department’s assistant athletic director for internal operations. During his tenure, Frank has elevated the Penguins into one of the most decorated periods in the program’s NCAA Division II history, highlighted by a shared PacWest regular-season championship in 2022, PacWest Coach of the Year honors, the program’s first PacWest championship, a record-setting 12-win season and continued growth in both conference recognition and academic achievement.
Frank guided Dominican to its breakthrough campaign in 2022 as the Penguins shared the PacWest regular-season championship with Biola after finishing with 24 conference points. Picked seventh in the preseason poll, Dominican became the first team in school history to claim a PacWest championship and set a new program best with 12 wins. Frank was voted PacWest Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year by his peers, joining Booker Harris and Gary Nelson among Dominican coaches to earn conference individual honors.
The 2022 season also produced the most All-PacWest selections in the program’s NCAA Division II era at the time, with Brian Sanchez and Louie Galdamez earning First Team honors, Aboubacar Cisse landing on the Second Team, and Jesus Duran and Eddie Silverbush collecting Third Team recognition. The championship season added to a growing list of all-conference success under Frank, whose student-athletes have earned 23 All-PacWest or All-Northern California honors since he arrived in San Rafael. That group includes 15 different Penguins, led by 2023 PacWest Player of the Year Diego Grande, two-time First Team honorees Galdamez and Lex Bernier, and standouts such as Sanchez, Silverbush, Arturo Carrillo Contreras, Luke Raley, Armando Jimenez, Alejandro Reyes and Rolando Gonzalez.
Frank’s teams have also rewritten the Dominican record book. In 2019, the Penguins produced one of the most prolific attacking seasons in school history, setting program records for single-season points, points per game, goals, goals per game, game-winning goals and overall team points. Dominican finished that season with 104 points, 38 goals and 28 assists, while Raley led the attack with 18 goals and 41 points.
Academic achievement has remained a defining part of the program under Frank. Since his first fall season in 2018, Dominican men’s soccer has produced 95 unique Academic All-PacWest honorees, counting each student-athlete once regardless of how many times he earned the award. The Penguins have consistently placed large groups on the conference’s academic list, reflecting the program’s standard of success across competition, classroom performance and student-athlete development.
Frank came to Dominican with deep Bay Area coaching experience. Before taking over the Penguins, he spent two seasons as the head coach at Holy Names in 2016 and 2017 and three seasons as an assistant coach at Academy of Art from 2013-15. He previously served seven seasons as an assistant coach at UC Santa Cruz, where he helped oversee fundraising, recruiting and team logistics.
A former team captain at UC Santa Cruz, Frank earned a Bachelor of Arts in business management economics in 2007 before continuing his playing career professionally with San Jose Frogs FC and as a reserve player in the Bundesliga and MLS with the Houston Dynamo and San Jose Earthquakes. He later earned a master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University Irvine in 2016.
Frank holds a U.S. Soccer Federation B license, NSCAA National Diploma and English Football Association Level 1 coaching license.
