Holboke nominated for 2017 Woman of the Year

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Senior Carly Holboke was nominated for the 2017 NCAA Division II Woman of the Year award announced Tuesday by the NCAA.

"Carly is a true role model of what a student-athlete represents academically and giving back to the community," Dominican athletic director Amy Henkelman said. "Carly makes everyone around her better simply by her presence."

Holboke is second on Dominican's all-time scoring list with 1,062 points in her career as a Penguin. She trails only teammate Sandra Ikeora on the list. This past season Holboke averaged 9.1 point, 3.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists to help Dominican to a 16-12 record, and tied for sixth in the PacWest with a 12-8 record in conference play. She scored a career-high 23 points in a narrow double overtime loss to Azusa Pacific this past season.

"Carly was a leader for our women's basketball team," Dominican head coach Tim LaKose said. "She led by example on and off the court. On the court, she was one of our best shooters. She would often come early and stay late to put in extra work. Carly would also encourage and assist her teammates to do the same. Off the court, Carly excelled in the classroom and was an outstanding ambassador to our community. She participated in several community service projects, and always did so with an enthusiastic manner."

A fantastic student as well, Holboke was named Academic All-PacWest all four years of her college career. She was named the Dominican Women's Basketball Newcomer of the Year in 2014 and this past season was given the Dominican Women's Basketball Coach's Award.

Holboke has served as the president of the Penguin Student Athlete Advisement Committee (PSAAC) as well as the president of the PacWest Student Athlete Advisement Committee. Holboke was also heavily involved in Dominican's Make-A-Wish reveal in September.

"It's an incredible honor to be nominated for this award," Holboke said. "I am humbled that my athletic directors and coaches have nominated me for this recognition and am proud to represent Dominican in such a high regard. I'm proud of graduating from Dominican as a student-athlete. It's not an easy thing to do, and I'm proud that I was able to accomplish such a feat. I am also proud of the impact our athletic community has made on the greater Marin community. As athletes, we represent more than just our respective teams and schools and I'm proud to have been such a positive light in Marin."

The NCAA Woman of the Year program honors the academic achievements, athletics excellence, community service and leadership of graduating female college athletes from all three divisions. To be eligible, a nominee must have competed and earned a varsity letter in an NCAA-sponsored sport, must have completed eligibility in her primary sport, and must have earned her undergraduate degree by summer 2017.

This year 544 nominations were submitted, the most ever in the history of the Woman of the Year program, 117 of those nominations were from the Division II level. The average GPA of the nominees was 3.69.
