Penguins miss national tournament by six strokes

VALLEJO, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's golf team narrowly missed out on a bid to the NCAA Division II tournament by just six strokes, finishing in eighth place out of 20 teams in the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional at the par-72 Hiddenbrooke Golf Club.

Dominican shot a 308 in its final round to go with rounds of 304 and 307 to finish at 919 strokes (+55). No. 8 Cal State Monterey Bay ran away with the team title. The Otters shot a combined 887 (290-303-294, +23), 19 strokes better than second-place Sonoma State. The No. 29-ranked Seawolves carded a 906. No. 5 Chico State and No. 9 Simon Fraser tied for third place at 908 and West Texas A&M earned the fifth and final bid to the national tournament at 913 strokes. CSUMB's Ray Richards and Colorado Springs' Patrick Skakel tied for the individual title at one-over 217.

Freshman Ty Macias, who flirted with first place including at the end of his first round and after Wednesday's front nine, matched his second round of 75 and slipped to a sixth-place tie in the 108-player field. Birdies on holes two and four found Macias at two-under through his front nine. He then bogied on holes 12 and 13 to fall even, then went back to one-under with a birdie on 14. He doubled hole 15 then salvaged a par on hole 16, where he had recorded doubles his previous two rounds, which was especially impressive given that his tee shot landed in the tall grass and nearly in the water. However, he bogied 17 and needed an eagle on 18 to stay in the hunt. Macias' tee shot landed on the green and his long putt rimmed out of the cup and skimmed back out several yards. Macias was instead forced to settle for par.

Sophomore Drew Nelson had four birdies on the day but doubled his final two holes to finish with a 76 for the second day. Combined with an opening round of 79, he finished at 231 strokes (+15) and tied for 41st place.

Junior Pomi Milton shot his lowest round of the tournament, 75, to go with two rounds of 79. His score of 233 (+17) placed him in a tie for 47th place.

Forbes Collins II wrapped up his college career with an eagle on his final hole. The senior shot an 82 on Wednesday to finish tied for 57th place at 19-over (76-77-82, 235).

Junior Michael Price posted a 90 in his final round and finished the tournament at 267 strokes (+51).

While Dominican won't advance to the national tournament, it was still a historic run for the Penguins as the men's golf team became the first Dominican team to earn a team berth to an NCAA Division II regional tournament.

"Our goal all year was to make it to regionals," said Head Coach Gary Nelson. "We were very competitive in this tournament down to the final day and had an individual [Macias, competing] on his final hole. It's been a lot of fun to watch this group compete and an honor to be their coach."
