Box Score LACEY, Wash. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team started hot but ended cold in a 49-36 loss to host Saint Martin's University in the final game of the SMU Tournament.
Dominican (2-7) burst out to a 14-4 lead thanks to a pair of baskets by
Sarah Nelson and a layup by
Melissa Boscarino. An eight point run by SMU (6-5) chipped the lead to a basket but an
Yvonne Sanchez layup with three seconds to go in the half kept the lead at four, 27-23.
The Lady Penguins came out of the locker room ice cold though and scored just two points in the first 12 minutes of the second half. By then, the Saints had overcome the deficit and pushed the lead to 10 points in their favor. A Sanchez three-pointer cut the lead to six but the Lady Penguins were unable to recover from the slow start.
Forward Chelsea Haskey led all players with 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Saints. Guard Angela Gelhar added 11 points on 9-of-10 free throw shooting.
Nelson had nine points, eight in the first half, and nine rebounds. The sophomore center, who entered the week atop NCAA Division II in blocks, added five on the night. Sanchez came off the bench to add nine points on 4-of-8 shooting.
Jasmine Cox grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for Dominican.
The Lady Penguins head to Sonoma State on Wednesday, Dec. 19 for the last non-conference game of the season. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in Rohnert Park.
